Department of Medical Imaging hosts Clinical Instructors in a workshop to improve training of students at Clinical Sites

 

The Department of Medical Imaging of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, KNUST has organised a day workshop for clinical instructors from affiliated health training sites who aid in the practical training of students to equip them with refreshed knowledge to improve the training and assessment of students on the 22nd February 2024 at the Boadi Medical Enclave.

Speaking at the workshop, Professor Alexander Yaw Debrah, the Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences urged the Clinical Instructors to treat students as clients per International Medicine Practice, be patient with them and instill in the students the relevance of Medical Imaging and Diagnostics in healthcare delivery. He also revealed that the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences puts premium interest in the organisation of such workshops for the key partners who collaborate with the Faculty in training students. Professor Debrah stated that the modern means of training healthcare professionals is mainly on evidence-based learning, “hence the role of the clinical instructors is very crucial for the development of the students”, he added.

Dr. Yaw Amo-Wiafe, the head of the Medical Imaging Department in his remarks revealed that they have seen the need to collaborate with the clinical instructors to bridge the gap between the industry and academia. Dr. Amo-Wiafe lectured the audience on the roles and influence of a Clinical Instructor. He explained that a clinical instructor is the primary link to a successful clinical experience. He added that individuals designated as such, in allied health education is primarily responsible for the transition process of formal learning of the academic content to clinical practice by sustaining practical knowledge through reflection and critical thinking.

Also speaking at the workshop, Dr. Andrew Donkor, the Examination Officer of the Department of Medical Imaging shared with the Clinical Instructors ways in dealing with difficult students and how to foster good relationships with them at the clinical sites to improve the training of the students.
