WIPO Shortlists KNUST AmpeSports Game for Global Recognition

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), through its Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Science, has gained international recognition, as its innovative video entry, “AmpeSports A Ghanaian Traditional Game Reimagined,” has been officially shortlisted in the prestigious World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Youth Video Competition 2026.

The video highlights the visionary work led by Prof. Monday Omoniyi Moses and his team at the Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Science in transforming the widely loved Ghanaian traditional game Ampe into a modern, standardised competitive sport. The project introduces structured rules, a designed playing court, and innovative scoring software to support organised competition.

Under the competition theme “Game Changers: IP Powering Sports Innovation,” the entry demonstrates how intellectual property can preserve cultural heritage while promoting innovation in sports. Through this initiative, Ghana’s traditional games are being positioned for global recognition and modern sporting development.

The Office of Grants and Research (OGR) at KNUST, through its Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer (IP&TT) Unit, is supporting the AmpeSports team in securing intellectual property rights and exploring commercialisation opportunities for the innovation. The competition entry itself was also produced through a collaboration between OGR and the Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Science.
